WiFi and networking

Do you need to extend your WiFi to a garden office or mobile home?

A home WiFi connection has about 25 m radius in which you can use it before then signal becomes too weak to use.

You have several effective options. Each method varies in terms of installation complexity, reliability, and cost.

  • Wi-Fi extenders amplify your existing Wi-Fi signal by receiving it from your main router and rebroadcasting. However performance can be poor.
  • Running an Ethernet cable from your home router to the garden office provides a direct and stable internet connection and is the best option when possible.
  • Power-line adapters use your home’s electrical wiring to transmit internet signals. They work well when the wiring is in good condition but performance can vary based on the quality of your electrical wiring and distance between adapters. They normally require both properties to share a common electrical distribution board.
  • A Point to Point wireless system consists of two units—one mounted on your home and the other on the garden office, creating a direct wireless link. Installation and configuration can be tricky but they can work well with good line of site between the two properties.

Caravan owners often face different issues.

The site may provide a general WiFi signal around the park but it is often too weak inside the caravan.

One solution to this is to fit an external antenna to the outside of the van to receive the signal. A cable is run from the external antenna to a new WiFi router inside the caravan which provided a stronger signal.
